Greetings All,
Carrying on from a topic elsewhere, here's summat I came across just now re. ice, salt & roads:
Forman, Richard T. T. Road ecology: science and solutions Island Press, 2003 ISBN 1559639334, 9781559639330 at Google Books

The author points out that while the price of using salt is $50 a ton (2001 prices), if you factor in - like what we does with our carbon footprints - other costs such as damage to road surface, corrosion to vehicles and bridges, etc, as well as the loss of erosion-preventing vegetation, the actual cost is $1600 a ton...

I was horrified this year first by our local townhall having bought their own mini snowplough to make the village roads into deathtraps accesible but then the horror was magnified by witnessing the amount of salt being spewed.... with the river (fresh water?) in eyesight.
