IberiaNature Forum and RSS feeds
« on: May 21, 2014, 23:27 PM »
Hi all

I have been asked about RSS feeds for the forum and how to get more links of latest posts rather than the default 5. Actually a really good question and the solution fairly simple :)

What is RSS?
RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it.

The forum RSS defaults at 5 latest posts and the link is at the very bottom of the forum in the footer. (Strangely enough its three letters "RSS")

Here is the link for the default 5 latest posts on the forum
http://www.iberianatureforum.com/index.php?action=.xml;type=rss

However, with a clever bit of adjusting the link above to this......
http://www.iberianatureforum.com/index.php?action=.xml;sa=recent;limit=50;type=rss

You get the latest 50 posts on the forum.... You can change the number 50 to whatever you want to suit your needs....

It's actually a quicker way to check out all the latest posts rather than scrolling to the bottom of the forum where also there is a list of the 10 latest posts. :)

Hope that helps.

Clive

Hi Clive,

This type of link does not work any more, for about a week or more! I made a new RSS subscription, which works, but with only 5 posts. What should be changed?

Saludos

Always worth throwing a feed through the W3M feed validator if there's a problem with a feed. Even if you as a user don't understand it, it can be useful for the webbod to work out what the problem may be. That a feed is valid is also useful information for a webbod.

Hi Clive!

Very strange! I´m on Firefox too! I tried resubscribing to the extended link, but no! The simple one with 5 posts works, so I don´t think we can blame it on Google!

Petrea

PS: Neither I nor Google know what is a webbod!

webbod = webmaster/mistress/admin/person/bod

What I was trying to say is that there are basically two places where an RSS feed can go wrong.

1: The feed itself is bad or malformed (in which case the feed validator can give you some clues). If this is the case, it's the probably the webbod's responsibility to fix it.

2: Your feed reading software is interpreting the feed wrongly. I use the 50-item feed successfully with newsbeuter on my laptop and Sparse RSS on my phone.

The RSS feed has been working for a year without problems. It stopped working about at the time, when all this "blog-work" started(?).

I´m not sure what you mean, Clive, as mentioned the browser is Firefox.

I know the feed coming in to the forum from the vulture council has an awful layout and they said they would get it fixed..... Marias feed looks good though both from the walking website and her own blog... Feeds from Wildside Holidays look OK on here as well.

I also removed pretty urls from the forum at about the same time... Maybe its that...

However this link is working fine for me....

Hey, now it works, the old feed with 20 posts!  :)  The new one, however, with 50 does not!  :noidea:

Happy to know it's not just me! It does work on other websites, however.
