There's an interesting article in the Independent today about the tensions surrounding the return of the wolf to France.

Thanks for that Lucy, as you say, very interesting... The tensions there mirror the ones here in Spain a bit don't they?

If I had to bet on what's going on with the poisoning I would say that it is the work of a lone radical pastor on a quest to disrupt anything he/she can and destabilise any plans or future agreements...

It's very sad that some idiot is killing these beautiful dogs. I agree with Clive, that that's the only explanation that makes any sense. Not that there's any sense to it.
"These attacks on sheepdogs are meant to destabilise the systems which have been adopted to protect sheep from wolves. They are poisoning sheepdogs to intimidate the shepherds who are playing by the new rules."

Signed and took the liberty of adding the forum as my website. I also found a snippet of the news in English on the Connexion;

"A WOLF shot in the Haute-Savoie is the first to be killed by state hunters.

Since 2008, six authorisations to kill wolves have been issued in areas in France but none of them have resulted in a death.

A spokesman for the Haute-Savoie prefecture, which authorised the killing, said: “Many wolf attacks have taken place in this sector since the start of the year, to the detriment of local farmers, who are angry.”

The wolf was killed in Glières, just over 20km from the town of Thônes, where in April several thousand people marched in protest at the number of wolf attacks in the area.

The Office National de la Chasse et de la Faune Sauvage says there were 150 wolves living in France at the beginning of 2008, mainly in areas in and around the Alps."
