Sierra de Grazalema

WWW
« on: September 25, 2008, 23:02 PM »

I took these photos today of two dragonflies perched in the garden...are they Common Darters Sympetrum striolatum??

seen together on a rock at around 500m altitude in the Sierra de Grazalema, with a slow flowing river alongside garden.

The male posed very patiently but the female flew off quickly so i didn't get a better close up.   Roll Eyes

Help in id appreciated,
Sue

Yes, it totally looks so; those white flanks I think that are singular to this species.... but wait for other comments.

Hi Sue,

Both you & Jesus are absolutely right, both insects are Common Darters - Sympetrum striolatum. The fact that you have good head shots of both insects helps a lot because you clearly see there are no black markings down the side of the eye/face (frons) junction which narrows the species down a bit as well. It's interesting to compare the abdomen markings of the Red-veined & Desert Darters from recent posts to highlight the differences in those areas too.

Nice photos!
Regards

Yes, I was wondering about those...

How much superglue did you put on that rock? And how long did you have to wait subsequently for something to land on it? biggrin
