Hello,
I would like to know if there is / or has ever been a resident population of white tailed eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla) on the iberian peninsula. I have read about the occasional sighting - but it was not clear as to whether these were resident examples or simply eagles who accidentally wandered in.

I had no idea but it seems the answer is yes.

This Ministerio de Medio Ambiente document states they are classified as extinct, and that once definately bred in the Balearics (Ibiza and Mallorca) the latter in 19th (?) century, and possibly in Girona

In Spanish the bird is a Pigargo común, which seems a strange word to me.

Cheers
Nick

White-tailed eagle spotted on Monte Perdido, first in Spain in more than 50 years!
