The worst storms in El Hierro's history with 500mm in 36 hours has decimated the population of the highly endangered El Hierro Giant Lizard (Lagarto gigante de El Hierro - Gallotia simonyi)

Only 102 survive of world population of 282 has survived (El Pais)

Update, the recovery programme will take 6-7 years to recover. This news article in El Pais also gives a good overview of the species and its history

La recuperación del lagarto gigante de El Hierro se retrasa seis o siete años
