Evolution at its basic form.... The chick didn't survive because of it's failure to follow the rules set out for it... It's only rules were stay in the nest and wait for food.....

one of the adults(female?) is now trying to brood the chick but she can't settle on it very well as it is on the slope at the side of the nest.... I wonder how long it will be before the parents give up and go through the re mating process....

I presume that this web cam footage is being recorded somewhere?

I was watching the little mite just before 6:00 PM (English time) but when I looked again at 6:40 PM I found it motionless and apprently dead.   The little thing was growing so fast and seemed so robust that I just couldn't believe it.  The whole household is now in mourning - with all three of us oddly touched.

Mum came back and fussed around for a while and was then joined by dad - even though I expected a size difference I was surprised just how much smaller it was.  Let's hope a second brood is possible,

Devasting news, just when its neck was getting so strong. It must have been gut-wrenching for those of you helplessly watching it happen.
I'm trying very hard not to anthropomorphise and to be scientific about the whole thing. I shed a tear when I saw that the webcam's still running this a.m. but suppose it's of great interest to see if the chick's body is ejected from the nest (or eaten? Do birds do that as a feline would?) Is it possible that it was fed something too big? That doesn't seem right after watching how delicately it was fed. Let's hope there are more eggs laid soon......

It's just occurred to me, is it more likely that the pair will use another nest site?

Like Mark Twain it appears that tales of the chick's death have been exaggerated .... I've just looked at the link and there's the chick squawking away looking full of life!  Unless they're showing an earlier tape, it looks fine,

Hi all,

I have very mixed feelings about the course of action that the people in charge are now taking.

First they cut the live feed so that no one can see what is happening between the adult pair now as they go through the process of re establishing bonds and possibly going through the mating process again.

Playing back pictures of a cute little chick before it died is all well and good but there is nothing on the video picture to say that it is archive footage.

Now I read on the site that they are going to collect the chick in order to carry out a post mortem. I really can't see what more information this will give them or in what way it will help the adult pair. In fact someone abseiling down to the nest site and getting the chick corpse will more than likely scare off an already agitated pair of eagles resulting in a failed breeding season....

I think it is much more important to leave the chick where it is and to study what the adults do over the next few days.... Human interaction at this point will destroy what could have been a big learning curve in how an adult pair of eagles respond to the loss of their only chick.

The webcam's back on and  there's a new chick on the nest!  It was decided to bring a chick from a nest outside the park in an area where lack of appropriate food has made it difficult for the birds to raise their brood in the past.

Quote

Hope this one has better luck. At the moment it's squeaking healthily, and foster mum's just flown off.

I might be OK at identifying birds, but I'm obviously rubbish at remembering who wrote what!  It's not the first time I've made such a slip - apologies,

They don't say whether the nest they took the new chick from had another chick or not. Do you think that because the project is endangered species based, they couldn't afford to leave nature be? (Trying not to think black, funding thoughts.)

Hi Lisa,

I also had some misgivings, as it seemed a bit like the show must go on, at any cost.  But now a more detailed explanation has appeared on the park website (http://www.diba.es/parcsn/newsletter/detall.asp?Id=2039).  The new chick comes from a nest of two and its parents only managed to rear one of their two chicks last year.  The pair on the webcam have been unable to rear any chicks successfully for seven years, and the two other pairs of Bonelli eagles in the park won’t be breeding this year as the two males have disappeared (one while its mate was incubating). In this light, it doesn’t seem a bad thing to move the chick.  Successful breeding seems such a struggle.

I'm surprised that no official entity acted when the chick fell from the nest. The Bonelli's Eagle is a seriously declining species, and I'm sure it could have been taken to a wildlife recovery centre. That is what they're for isn't it?

Hi Steve,

The chick actually tumbled over inside the nest, and appeared to choke.  It happened extremely quickly.

I just had a look at the foster chick: its plumage has become very mottled and there's a lot of vigorous wing-beating going on.  Still trying to snuggle under mum though.

The last time I checked I saw the young eagle perched right at the edge of the nest, half off-camera.  It looked ready to go.

El poll de l'àliga perdiguera del Parc del Garraf abandona el niu

19/05/2008
http://www.diba.cat/parcsn/newsletter/detall.asp?Id=2172

Greetings All,
Nick's in one of 'is playful moods and means that the chick has left its roost (last Sunday), or words to that effect. (News dated 19th May - the day Nick gave us the scoop).
