Dear all,

We have just had a holiday down on the Cabo de Gata and whilst out and about we came across El Cortijo los Fraile. We had known about the cortijo as a fine example of Almerian agrarian architecture built by Dominican monks in the 19th century. We also had heard the story of the famous crime of passion committed there in the 20's. It was called the Crime of Nijar and was used as the base for Garcia Lorcas play Blood Wedding. The Good the Bad and the Ugly was also filmed here.

But what a distressing sight it was to see so derelict and neglected. Does anyone have an update on plans to restore the building?

I have written more about this encounter on my blog http://www.losgazquez.com/blog/ and would welcome comments.

Happy New Year to all, Simon aka Los Gazquez

Hi Simon,

I was experimenting with a new section over Christmas and coicidently posted this. Falling down it is, but on both times I've been I've found it wonderfully atmospheric

PS Ignore the wordpress theme - I've had an issue with the lastest wordpress and and my main theme. Guess I'll sort it out one of these days.

Perhaps there is hope for el Cortijo del Fraile?  Huh  Last year it was declared of cultural interest:  clapping

 http://www.mcu.es/patrimonio/CE/BienCulturales/Definicion.html

and now there are negociations about restoration. Unfortunately, as usual,  the issue seems to be that "the other guys" should pay!  banghead
