Montpellier snake eating bird

Our newest member Rob asked me to post this remarkable photo for him. A young female Montpellier snake. Thanks to Clive and Sergi for confirmation. But what is its victim?

Rob, perhaps you could tell us how you chanced upon it? Did you see it eat the whole bird?

I was sitting in my garden reading in the afternoon;  something caught my eye in the garden fence. 

We throw bread out there for the sparrows and they balance in the wire net fencing waiting to swoop down for the bread.  I looked up and saw the snake with the bird in its mouth.

I called everyone out to see it, got my camera, took a very quick photo and moved in to take a better shot when the snake released the bird which was now dead.  It stood up just like a Cobra, looked at us, then disappeared in to the undergrowth.  I think the camera must have flashed firghtened it!!

Welcome to the Iberianature Forum

Montpellier's are known to rear up like cobras and emit a loud hiss when they feel threatened and if cornered will make a strike if you get too close.

Shame he lost his bird though. It would have been good to have a complete set of pictures right through to the last tail feather disappearing....
