The Spanish Bow - Andromeda Romano-Lax

Although it's had rather mixed reviews, I'd recommend this book.  It tells the life story of a cellist (the author was inspired to write it after researching the life of Pablo Casals) from the late 1800s through to the 1940s.  In part it's about the struggle of a impoverished Spanish muscian to following his calling and in part an examination of morality; the constant backdrop is the change and conflicts that emerged as Spain coped with its changing status in the world .  I found it an interesting and absorbing read even though I'm not in the least musical.  Given that the writer lives in Anchorage, Alaska I think she's done a pretty good job of writing about the changes in Spain over the period of the novel.  Then again I'm probably not in a good position to judge this,
