Returning from Madrid Barajas airport Tuesday by the back road to pick up the N1 at fuente El Fresno,  a large adult polecat traffic victim - not  far from the site of  a similar loss approx five years ago. The river Jarama is close-by which is likely used as a territorial highway by these fascinating animals. Seeing that beautifully marked fur carried me back to my youthful years in Wiltshire when I was rarely without a polecat ferret or two in large inside pockets I had sewn into my jacket -- halcyon days before myxomatosis. Writing this has just reminded me of a splendid volume which was my bible in those days -- The Poacher's Handbook by Iain Niall.  A gem, with extraordinarily evocative woodcut illustrations. Don't know if it's still in print but well-worth looking for.  The author's affinity with nature is delightful. That's the difference between hunters and poachers I guess!

The nearest I ever got as a kid to anything wild in my pocket was a rabbit's foot!
