It is easier than it used to be to buy free-range eggs in urban areas in Spain, at least in Barcelona. But beware of misleading bucolic pictures on egg cartons. Free-range eggs are often called huevos de granja (huevos de pagés in Catalonia) but if you don’t trust the seller, the best way is to check the first number of the codes on the eggs themselves:

0-hens raised outdoors ecologically

1-hens raised outdoors

2-barn-raised hens

3-battery-farmed hens

Is this an EU-wide classification?

Here in my part of Andalucia the supermarkets are almost entirely stocked with 3ES category A eggs..... A great shame and even worse I sometimes buy them as free range here even in the campo are hard to come by..... My chickens are still leaping their coral fence and hiding theirs... Have to fix this issue as buying battery eggs causes short circuits in my brain already stressed with my hippocritical way of trying to live as a better person... Sigh....

Right, so it's more in Barcelona  - and not all supermarkets here by any means.

These have varying degrees of free-rangers:

Caprabo, Condis, Suma...

There are more but I can't remember now.

Have a friend who has a large organic free range egg business, and he was hearing that there is a shortage here in Spain. He was wondering if it would be possible to load the friut delivery lorries which return here empty, with eggs??? any possibility of interest out there
