Spider for ID please:: Solved Male Argiope lobata .

(1/3) > >>

JSW099:
Hi all,

We - my wife and I - were down in Tarifa at the weekend and my wife took a picture of Argiope lobata and another spider alongside of it, can anyone id this for us. Unluckily for it the Argiope ate it a few seconds later hence the only photo of it.

Clive:
Is it the male?... They are incredibly much smaller than the females and look nothing like them....

JSW099:
Clive,

I have looked all over the net following your suggestion, but have come up with nothing except the male of this species is small (body length 6 - 8 mm) but the female is large and spectacular at up to 25 mm in length.
My Spider id book only covers the Northern part of Europe so I will just have to keep trawling the net for answers or better still a photo.

Clive:
I searched images with this......

JSW099:
Clive,

I too have searched this site and a few more besides, but still no definite clear picture of the male. The only thing I found was the description as follows::
Male 5 to 7.5 mm.
Abdomen without lobes. Colour black with two orange-brown wavy length bands.
Carapace silver with two dark longitudinal bands.
Legs to light brown with unclear dark annulations.
Palps yellow to light brown with dark tarsi.

Still searching..
