Blimey, Its not instant you know... Click of a mouse and hey presto there is the site at the top of Google?.... Indexing is incredibly complicated and full of pitfalls... You can get banned for no reason your server can get in the way....Search engine ranking works over a period of time from weeks to months to years... 24 hours since the fix just doesn't cut the mustard...

Calmly and slowly all the lost pages will come back on line when Google spiders the site again....

Nick, you could just submit the main URL to Google again... That will tell it to crawl

While trying to id my mushrooms I googled "bolets collserola", and also tried "images".  Lots of images from Iberianature appeared, none related to bolets, ranging from Peregrine falcons, the famous one of the wryneck and horseshoe whipsnake, beavers ....  Clicking on any them brought you to the home page of various dates.  Mystifying, but good, isn't it?

As its a wordpress install I would agree with Caesar in using an extension for wordpress for the sitemap instead of a stand alone like xml-sitemap generator...

I think that Google also looks for a robots.txt file as well and if it doesn't find one often leaves without indexing...

I still don't know for sure why this happened but definitely the new firewall on the server blocked Googlebots IP address for a couple of weeks before Nick and I noticed something wrong with our traffic.. Then a week to Isolate and fix the problem... Turning off the firewall is NOT an option...

Also 2 weeks ago Google did another big indexing reshuffle which coincided with this error on our server... Used to do it every 3 monthst but now it seems to do it whenever it feels like it...

These latest posts should really be in another topic down on the computers and contraptions board....

Caesar, I have tested it... If I remove my robots.txt and wait for googlebot to visit it often leaves without indexing new pages... I can see this from the stats. If the robots.txt is there it always indexes new pages... Now I say it "often" but not always leaves without indexing. There are a lot of people on forums discussing this subject... You can never say anything is 100 percent, especially  when talking about search engines.

Right, panic subsiding, Google has re-found my front page, though some pages still missing (eg. wolves). Glad to see the system works

Thanks to Clive, Ceasar's Grunt (bizzare name) and the rest of you.

I’m pleased to announce that Lucy has started her own blog on iberianature called straightforwardly enough, Lucy’s Blog.  Lucy will probably concentrate on Barcelona and environs with forays into the Catalan Pyrenees and her beloved Leonese mountains. http://iberianature.com/lucyblog/

Check out this frankly excellent post by Lucy, on Barcelona’s best kept secret, the heronry, perched in the trees above the city’s zoo. http://iberianature.com/lucyblog/2008/06/citadel-of-herons/

In the near future Simon will be joining in with his own blog from the deepest hinterlands of Catalonia.

Hi all,

After a none-too-subtle hint from Lucy I've begun the long slog of re-organising all the old html and new wordpress material into a series of channels (mammals, birds, etc".

I'm also cross referencing heavily the forum and news items, etc. as you will see.

Only completed the "channel" on mammals so far. Note the pages on bears, lynx and wolves are channels in their own right.

Just a short public thanks to Clive to helping me sort out yet again another technical problem on Iberianature.

If you're looking with whom to host, don't bother looking any further

A friend of mine, Anna Gallés, is helping out with the Spanish version of iberianature - naturaiberica. At the moment she’s compiling this very useful directory of opportunities for environmental volunteer work in Spain.  A wide range of activities is available from working black vultures in the Balearics to helping amphibians in Catalonia. I won’t translate these activities into English as some limited knowledge of Spanish is always going to be necessary to join up to these programmes, but if anyone has any specific questions, please don’t hesitate to email me.
