Normally a writer of historical crime books,  Sansom by using well researched facts and a fictional love story  has helped me bring the Madrid of 1940 into sharp focus. It was the prompt to read other books and to research all sorts of things  to bring the whole of Spain and its recent history into some kind of order and clarity.  Much yet to do this book eased me into it.  It has also produced a desire to go to Cuenca sometime soon.

Three-quarters of the way through. I'm very impressed so far.

I've just finished reading this book and totally agree with you Sue! A good story and an excellent insight into Spains turbulent history in the '40's. It explained to me why some of the elderly residents of our pueblo are as they are and has given me a slightly better understanding of what is behind the politics of Spain today.....however, as you said, it's really just a taster, whetting the appetite for more.
