I didn't know (until now) that Spain was the leader in Europe with regards to the planting of GM maize crops fro animal feed use...

Why is Spain leading the other countries in this? If you look at the graph in the BBC news page Portugal is way behind (as are the other countries)

Simple answer, Clive, I'm afraid:
Ten years ago, when the rest of Europe was procrastinating and/or dithering over all those nampy-pampy issues that worry the anti-GM wimps, chorradas (En. anyone?) such as health and ecology, the former Presidente del Gobierno - de cuyo nombre no quiero recordar - specifically authorised the multinational companies concerned to use Spain as their test tube foothold in Europe.
